In his younger years he went to Grambling State College in Louisiana and graduated with an accounting degree. During his time at Grambling State College, he also played center linebacker for the school's soccer team, the GSU Tigers coached by notable Eddie Robinson.

Coleman became a police officer after graduation. One of his individual officers prescribed that he join the neighborhood exercise center known as Metroflex. Brian Dobson was the owner of the exercise center and offered Coleman a free lifetime registration in case it allowed him to prepare him for Mr. Texas' next challenge.

Coleman went on to win the Mr. Texas title along with a few different successes, including NPC Texas Titles, and in 1991 took the Mr. Universe title which qualified him to participate in competing challenges backed by the IFBB.

Coleman won his first professional rivalry in 1995 at The Canada Star Cup. The following year he won the challenge once again. Followed by another versus the rest of the competition win in 1997 for The Russian Stupendous Prix. Coleman went on to win numerous expert titles, including eight consecutive Mr. Olympia titles.
